Tips and tricks for your herbarium

Jasmine Spreeuwers, Biology student and praeses of the Fabiant student club

“First- and second-year Bachelor students in the Biology programme are required to compile their own herbarium. It’s not as easy as you think. You need to find fifty plants from different families: 35 herbs, ten trees and five grasses. It really takes a long time to complete. To make the job easier, we usually organise a scouting trip with the Fabiant student club, visiting a number of specific places where you can easily find these plants. But then corona happened and a hike to find plants is not exactly an essential journey…”

So we switched our focus online, creating a Facebook group. After you’re admitted, you have access to a slew of tips and tricks to find and dry plants… In fact, you’ll get all the tips and tricks we’d share with you if you were to go on a herbarium hike with us. So it’s definitely worth joining the group if you’re a Biology student!

In pre-corona times, I organised events for our student club, as a praeses, along with the rest of our praesidium. We now do it all digitally. I have plenty of time on my hands, so I’m currently sorting family photos to create a personalised photo album for myself and my sisters.

I advise everyone to go out as much as you can while we’re allowed and to enjoy the sun. And do take a look at the lovely plants in the roadside verges. Biology students will know what I mean!”
